Missing You, Matt

Nelson tells me my blog is personal. Sometimes it has to here we go. A little over a week ago, I lost another good friend to cancer. Matt Wiederkehr was 34 years old and a founding member of Google's 2nd office (in NYC). I've known Matt for four years and have long admired him as a colleague, friend, father, and devoted husband. Matt's battle with colon cancer was thankfully somewhat brief, but when he learned about it his situation was quite advanced. I feel lucky that I was able to see him in August when I was last in NY. He had lost quite a bit of weight and had even grown a beard...but he was the same warm, affectionate, sincere guy that I've always known. We miss you, Matt...

  • Aren't all blogs necessarily personal ?
    Our condolences, bro.

  • Wow - I had no idea that he was ill. I'm really shocked - I don't think our extended family has lost someone like this before . . .

  • I shared an office with Matt at prior to him joining GOOGLE. He was so funny and enthusiastic and always "up". I know that he loved Jen so much the way he talked about her...I never knew him as a dad but I always knew he would be a great one...

  • Matt was my neighbor and I think of him often. He was a fantastic father (our daughters are the same age). The way to honor Matt is to remember him and do as he often said, "Don't sweat the small stuff."

  • Matt was such a great guy....I lived with him in Colleg for 2 years and he was the shining star that hung over our extended netwrok of friends. I think about Matt all the time....the best lesson to be learned from Matt was his utter lack of pre judging people. We're all still missing you badly brother. DF
